Friday Fascination: Deaf Club

Friday, Friday, it's time to let you know what I'm fascinated with at the moment, because it's Friday. I don't know where to start with this amazing band from the UK that I stumbled upon while listening to TOY one day. They're called Deaf Club, and the outnumbered female in the group (named Polly) is the one responsible for providing some of the most goosebump-infused vocals my ears have ever heard. Deaf Club are a little indie, a little shoegaze, and just the right amount of Daughter-esque vibes to cast a dark cloud over your listening session.
Deaf Club's forthcoming EP Take In Colour drops on August 5th via Transgressive Records, and this pretty penny featured below will be on it!

The song that really grabbed my ear's attention was "Lights" a B-side that accompanied "Moving Still" when it was released as a single last July. There's a limited amount of DC material available on the internet, but the quality of what they've released is amazing. After watching a handful of live videos of these guys at various festivals in Europe, I must admit I am pretty bummed to have missed out on them during this year's SXSW. One can only hope that they'll make their way back to the states, and possibly  tour with a band like Warpaint.

Be sure to check out Deaf Club over at their BandCamp page where you can find previous releases and the new EP starting next month!

Oh Land - My Boxer

After two years, Oh Land is back! It seems like yesterday when a friend sent me this amazing Yuksek remix of Oh Land's "Son of a Gun" in which I had no idea who the vocals belonged to. Her sophomore self-titled album was one of my favorites back in 2011, and I was pretty ecstatic when I finally heard that a new album was on its way this year.
"My Boxer" is the latest from her forthcoming studio album Wish Bone, and in my opinion - one of Oh Land's more experimental tracks to date. Her new sound isn't as cutesy as what was on her last album, but instead a spunkier version of the singer-songwriter is developed in the new material (which I love.) Here's the first track that was released a couple of months ago titled "Renaissance Girls." It was this live version below that really really attracted me to the track, and I am looking forward to hearing Wish Bone in its entirety.
Feel like taking a trip down memory lane? Here's Oh land's self-titled album that I can't seem to shut up about, and you can be the judge. Either way, make sure to listen & let your ears decide.
Happy Sunday, y'all!

Friday Fascination: Cayucas

Ever tried to search for the perfect, quintessential summer song? Well, I’ve got the quintessential summer album to share with all of you. Cayucas are truly a Friday Fascination. I urge you all to kick off your weekend with their surf rock breezy tune ‘Cayucos’

‘Cayucos’ - Cayucas

Cayucas hail from Santa Monica, California, whose sun soaked sound will leave you craving summer. I had the pleasure of seeing them live in Santa Barbara at the lovely Velvet Jones a few months back before the release of their debut album ‘Bigfoot.’ They opened for another great LA band called Races and left us all wanting more.

The band includes two brothers, Zach and Ben Yudin (who seriously are identical, I can’t help but think they are twins) Christian Koons, Banah Winn and Casey Wojtalewicz. Since the release of their album in late April, Cayucas have toured all over Europe, including an appearance at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound 2013.

They’re a new band that’s quickly stepping onto the scene thanks to their incredible album. After listening to it in full, you’ll find that it’s a bit nostalgic at times, making you think and yearn for previous summer days and nights.

You can listen to their album ‘Bigfoot’ on Spotify or Rdio, and if you like what you hear – definitely give them a friendly purchase over at iTunes, you won’t regret it!

Remixing the Night Away

I'll be honest with you guys, it takes a LOT for me to consider a remix when I'm already a fan of the original. This goes to show, that as an avid Ellie Goulding fan... I've only considered a small handful of remixes of her material. The first one that cracked my complicated style was Blackmill's Dubstep remix of EG's stellar cover of "Your Song" originally performed by the one & only Elton John.
True life: I still melt every time I hear this song. Since then I've totally opened up to remixes, it just takes a good solid listen or seven to figure out what it is that I love about it in comparison to the original. Sometimes it's amazing, and sometimes it's just god awful. Here are a few current remixes that I've stumbled across by luck, and hey - they're pretty good regardless of the mood you're in.
Enjoy! xx

First off, this is a free download, so definitely grab it while you have the opportunity to! I love this stripped down version of the track from Young Wonder's recently released EP titled Show Your Bones Check out the video for the original track here! As I've admitted on previous posts, I've fallen in love with Feel Good Lost & what they've done in terms of directing videos for Young Wonder!
P.S. Still obsessed with this video for "Time" that's also featured on Show Your Teeth.

I consider myself blessed to work in an environment that plays music that I can appreciate just like this remix by Ryan Hemsworth featuring Angel Haze of Cat Power's "Manhattan."
being one of the several tracks that are featured in our daily mixes each week. "Manhattan" is my favorite track off CP's latest studio release Sun, and honestly it took me a few listens...but hey, you can now colored me ecstatic because I love this remix.

Another free download that I am currently in love with. I love that Tycho can take a song and still include a little something-something that makes you automatically think "wow that kind of sounds like Tycho." It's 100% instrumental, and I'm 100% in love with it.
Truth be told, I  first heard this Jacob Plant remix of Iggy Azalea's "Work" before I actually heard the original several months ago. I can't imagine ending this post on a better note then with this gem of a remix. Hopefully this will be one of the tracks that will hit you the same it did for me.  I can't help but start every "getting ready" process without this remix, it's just that good.

Friday Fascination: Soft Reeds

This week's fascination is Soft Reeds, a band from Kansas City that I just *magically* stumbled across the other week. I wish I could remember exactly how & when I found these guys, but it really doesn't matter at this point. All that matters is that you can count on their sophomore record Blank City to occupy a spot when my "Best of 2013" list rolls around. This band deserves way more attention for how talented and crafty they are with their sound. It's been a minute since I last found an album that flows so well like Blank City does. It's hard for me to suggest which songs I like more, because in all honesty- I dig each track equally.
Here they are performing "Pregnant Actress" at Element Recording Studios as part of a segment for Middle of the Map Fest. It's almost unreal how much it sounds like the version that's on the album, which gives me the feeling that this band puts on one hell of a live show. Middle of the Map Fest is curated by The Record Machine, an independent record label that started in Kansas City, Missouri back in 2003. Be sure to check out the independent record label's website where you can find a roster filled with up & coming midwest talent!

So, what'd you think? If you're digging it as much as I am, be sure to grab a copy over on iTunes. It'll be the best $9.99 you've spent all week!

Bringin' Back The B-Sides

As bold as it is to cover the legendary Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, I was thoroughly impressed by what Japandroids did with "Jack The Ripper."  This cover acted as the proper B-side to the duo's stellar jam "The House That Heaven Built" released last May via Polyvinyl Records
James Blake - "What Was It You Said About Luck?"
This B-side for the single "The Wilhelm Scream" is what really pulled me out of my ignorant phase where I didn't care much for the legend above. I know what you're thinking, but hey- I've learned my lesson! The only thing wrong with this track is that it's not long enough. ;)
La Sera - "Behind Your Eyes"
This one is an oldie, but a goodie in my opinion from La Sera aka Katy Goodman of Los Angeles. "Behind Your Eyes" served as the B-side to her 2010 single "Never Come Around." La Sera's breezy tunes always make the blistery days go by (as it did today.) As teased on the official Facebook page for La Sera, we could be hearing new material as early as December! Till then I'll just keep listening to last year's full-length Sees The Light (via Hardly Art,) which remains as one of the most addicting albums from 2012 - in my opinion.
Since this post is heading in a more peaceful direction, I chose to wrap it up with this lovely gem from Still Corners. "Hearts of Fools" was the B-side to their blissful crowd favorite "Fireflies" released just last fall via SubPop. If you're someone who appreciates a good solid album that's as smooth as silk - definitely check out Strange Pleasures

Two Words: London Grammar

I was almost finished with listening to Settle, the debut album from Disclosure that's been taking the world over by storm (or so it seems) when I stumbled across something amazing.  Out of every track that bounced in and out of my mind in a proper fashion, I found myself mesmerized by the last track. The song was called "Help Me Lose My Mind (feat. London Grammar)" and it immediately put my mind in a relaxing trance. Since then I've kept my eyes on this talented pop trio whose sound brushes the shoulders of artists like Zola Jesus and The XX. As I was on my flight back to Texas from California, I was thrilled to find this brand new from them called "Strong." For only being 23, Hannah Reid has the vocal capability that makes you want to melt into your seat from just how dark & captivating it truly is.

"Strong" is off their forthcoming debut album that comes out September 1st. In my personal opinion, I am looking foward to hearing their full-length after falling in love with their short but solid EP titled Metal & Dust.
Check it out below, or head over to iTunes to pick it up for less than $5!
