Back To YouTube Narnia

"YouTube Narnia" aka a one-way trip via the sidebar is always fun and interesting when you're staying in on a Friday night (like I did last night.) Started with a song from UK trio London Grammar that didn't make it on the US edition of their debut album If You Wait. From then on it's just a couple clicks away until you find yourself on a page of music you've never heard before (but have been around for quite some time.) Enjoy!

London Grammar - "Darling Are You Gonna Leave Me"

RY X - "Berlin"

Low Roar - "Patience"

We Are Trees - "Sunrise Sunset"

Mars Water - "Where The Sun Sets"

Fever Blanket - "Day Dream"

Show Preview: SKATERS @ Velvet Jones

In the 805 and without plans for tonight? NYC four-piece Skaters make their debut in Santa Barbara at Velvet Jones. I've been looking forward to finally catching these guys live for awhile ever since the release of their hit "I Wanna Dance (But I Don't Know How)" The release of their debut album Manhattan is something worth leaving the house for.
Their SoundCloud page nails it on describing the sound of Skaters - "smart, dynamic sound blends their disparate new wave, punk, and hip-hop influences into their own modern indie hybrid."
What more do you need to hear? Listen to Manhattan in its entirety below.

Snag tickets for the show here! See you there.

Friday Fascination: Laurel

If you've never heard of the talented singer-songwriter Laurel from a small town near Southampton, then today is your lucky day. (Thanks to Raymond Lew who introduced me to her around the time she made her US debut at Bardot's "It's a School Night"in LA.) Her voice is often a blend of Lana Del Rey & Lucy Rose, but at the end of the day her most recent EP To The Hills (via Killing Moon Records) is a gift that's unlike any other. (Head over to her artist page over on Turn First Artists to read more about this starlet who was inspired by the ever so amazing Laura Marling to pick up a guitar.)

& if her catchy single "To The Hills" wasn't enough to win you over, then maybe you haven't listened to her chilling cover of Patsy Cline's "Crazy."

P.S. Be sure to vist her SoundCloud page where you can find gems of all kinds including her stellar remix of Dan Croll's "Home" as well as a live performance of "Crazy."

Do your ears a favor & grab To The Hills on iTunes here

Must See Sasquatch: An Exercise in Festival Logistics

By Ethan Maffey

There are all kinds of different approaches to festival experiences. Camp out at the main stage all day, meander from stage to stage with no real purpose save for perhaps a few bands that sound familiar or frantically rush around the festival grounds trying to cram in the most prolific day of concerts ever.
The must-see Spotify playlists below aim for an experience somewhere in the middle.
The premise?
Start out with the first must-see performance of the day and then move from stage to stage avoiding any overlapping shows, each time choosing the best option available. It’s perfectly situated between the carefree and frenzied angles; effectively choosing the path of least resistance.

FRIDAY

From Portland rock outfit Modern Kin- formerly Drew Grow & the Pastors’ Wives—on the Yeti stage to Outkast on the main stage the first day of Sasquatch must-see music is an exercise in big sounds. That claim even rings true for Alejandro Rose-Garcia—who’s stage name is Shakey Graves—despite his mono-acoustic folk presentation. His music towers as a result of a resolute, less-is-more approach where his voice rumbles and emotions radiate like ice cold ocean waves.
ALTERNATE TIP: If the iconic hip hop of De La Soul truly doesn’t spark interest, a quick and worthy change can be made to the schedule yielding amazing results. Instead, check out White Sea’s performance on the Yeti stage. M83’s collaborating vixen Morgan Kibby touts strong vocals and a bent toward 80s pop.
PIT STOP: On the way to see Foals on the main stage, stop off at the El Chupacabra stage for a look at Maya Rudolph—of SNL fame—as her band Princess rips off covers of Prince songs.

SATURDAY

If Friday is the day for big flashy performances, Saturday is the day when everything quiets down a bit. Which is a good thing, since the second day of a music festival tends to be a bit more difficult to get through than the first.
Saturday’s back-to-back-to-back must-see schedule recommends somber but beautiful performances by the likes of crooner Willy Mason, pysch pop group Half Moon Run and Swedish sister folk duo First Aid Kit.
An afternoon interlude of dancing to hip hop from Danish artist SOL and rock from iconic band Violent Femmes give way to sleepy electro pop from Washed Out and an eventual main stage set by Cincinnati indie rock band The National.
ALTERNATE TIP: Want to wake up a little soon than the fourth show of the day? Skip First Aid Kit and get rocked by New York’s pop punk Luke Rathborne on the Yeti stage.
PIT STOP: Once the SOL dance party is done, head to see the Violent Femmes at the main stage. But not before stopping by El Chupacabra to check out the sexy shenanigans of comedic cabaret performer Bridget Everett.

SUNDAY

Perhaps the best trail of concerts for the weekend, Sunday’s starts off with Colorado’s John Grant; who puts on a show his publicist admits grown men cry at. His brand of alt-pop would probably have been better suited for a later show on a larger stage than Yeti, but as it is, will make a fine intro to the festival’s final day.
And with performances by Cold War Kids, Haim and Kid Cudi, Sunday is ripe for that special festival moment that could define the event.
It just might come from Scott Hansen’s—who makes music as Tycho—set on the El Chupacabra stage. His blend of live instrumentation and electronic landscapes makes the perfect emotional rollercoaster and serves as a great opportunity to reflect on the entire weekend.
ALTERNATE TIP: Cold War Kids have been around awhile. Chances are many people have already seen them live. Why not then take advantage of the chance to see new wave pop rock outfit Lucius on the Yeti stage?
PIT STOP: At some point, laughter by way of a great comedian ought to enter into the equation. On the way to see Haim after Black Joe Lewis, give 20 minutes to Demetri Martin at El Chupacabra.

FRESHVIBESMONDAY #29

This week's edition of FVM kicks off with POLICA's latest from their forthcoming 10". If you haven't purchased their sophomore release Shulamith, hang tight because they're about to release a deluxe version of the album that will come with new material as well. LA duo Street Joy released a catchy little number "Moon" that's perfect to start the morning off with.  "Your Love Is Killing Me" by Sharon Van Etten is one of my favorites from her forthcoming album Are We There? If you're a fan of honest music revolving around heartbreak and emotion, SVE is your gal. Last, but not least - Indie outfit Run Tiger Run is a recent find and I am hooked on their sound (time for you guys to make a visit overseas please.) This might be my favorite playlist yet.

Heading to Sasquatch this weekend and haven't made up your mind on who to see? Watch this space today, because Ethan from The Source Weekly created a plan & three playlists that's worth checking out. (I recommend it even if you can't make it to the Gorge.)

FYF Fest Lineup Announced + The Blood Brothers are Back!

Heads up, the FYF Fest lineup was announced this morning via KCRW & boy is it a beauty! Both days are packed with talent, and I had to do a double-take especially when I read the words "The Blood Brothers" on the bill. %&*$#@! (When life hands you a festival lineup like this one, there shouldn't be any hesitation in planning to go.) That band was one of my favorite bands in junior high and to hear that they're officially back after 7 years via Twitter is a beautiful thing.  Now excuse me while I take a trip down memory lane with their discography via Last.fm (but here's a few videos to refresh your memory of this magnificent Seattle band.)

Head over to FYFFEST.com for more information about the event!
( & this definitely won't be the last you'll hear from LYED about the festival.)

FRESHVIBESMONDAY #28

#FVM28 on a TUESDAY?! I know, I know (face falls immediately into palm) but maybe someday someone will grant my ongoing wish of making sure that there are more hours in the day.
Until then, dive into this week's playlist of fresh tunes from the past couple of days. Logging into SoundCloud this morning only to notice that Nero released their first proper track in quite some time was a sweet surprise to say the least.

I decided to wrap the playlist up with Seattle four-piece Tacocat because I can't get enough of their recent full-length NVM. (Give it a listen on Spotify here.) Catching them at Hardly Art's showcase at SXSW this year was a real treat, and you can watch their KEXP session by clicking here, which I highly advise you to do.

P.S. The magnificent Poliça from Minnesota will be releasing a deluxe edition of their sophomore album Shulamith which happened to be LYED's #1 album of 2013. Peep the link below thanks to Stereogum to hear more about the release as well as hear a new track "Raw Exit."

Friday Fascination: Crooked Colours

Today a lovely trio that go by the name of Crooked Colours released their debut EP titled In Your Bones (via Sweat It Out) and I haven't been able to take it off repeat. Album opener "Come Down" was originally released awhile back along with remixes from Yolanda be cool and Alison Wonderland that are totally worth checking out as well. Being from Australia, this group is in great company with artists such as Flume & Chet Faker who have already made an impact on the electronic scene over here in the states.

This EP is downright impressive and has a style that doesn't cater to one specific audience. I'm really excited to see where they go from here, but in the meantime- soak up this EP every chance you get.
P.S. Don't let this be the end - head over to their SoundCloud page to hear even more gems.

FRESHVIBESMONDAY #27

Happy Cinco de Mayo! This week's edition of FVM features a rather large handful of tunes that I'm super excited to share with y'all. A few highlights of the playlist include the latest from Hooray For Earth who are about to release their first album since their studio debut True Loves. "Keys" is something to get excited about, and it hopefully won't be long until Racy is released. Also, Brighton five-piece Phoria just released a breezy track "Emanate" that I have no problem in admitting I've contributed a chunk to the amount of listens (the ending gets me every time.) "Unguarded" by Rae Morris is taken from her Do You Even Know? EP that comes out this week! It's a lovely song that captures her talent quite perfectly if you ask me. Also there are a handful of songs in this playlist that were recently added to the LYED 2014 Playlist over on Spotify.
P.S. Once Olivver's "Attica '71" reaches 50,000 plays (which it probably will by the time you read this) it will become a free download (and that's definitely something worth taking advantage of because it's a solid summer gem.) If you haven't already, I suggest that you check out "Purge." It's part short film, part music video, and all around inspiring to witness. Definitely keep an eye out for this guy, he's going to be a game-changer.  Plus, his twitter is "pure gold."

What'd you think of this week's selection of songs?

LYED Lazy Sunday

Hello hello, it's Sunday, and you're either getting ready for brunch or preparing a Lazy Sunday extravaganza that's taking place in your bed (aka the most comfortable place, ever.) Nothing wrong with either of the 2 choices, in fact I prefer to do as much of both as possible. So while you're figuring out where to grab bottomless mimosas, or what to watch on Netflix - here's some of my favorite tunes that go well with a morning inspired by what we do best - absolutely nothing.
 Enjoy!

Lazy Sundays are the best, and if you have a song or two that would go well with this playlist, send them my way!

P.S. Have you checked out LYED's Best of 2014 playlist? It's definitely worth a listen/follow if it tickles your fancy ;)
