FRESHVIBESMONDAY #33

Time to unwind from your Manic Monday with this week's edition of FVM. A good friend of mine has been on a roll with releasing music under the moniker Olivver, and his latest "Lucy (Hurt People Hurt People)" has won my ears over as one of the best songs of the summer. It's been a minute since we've heard from White Arrows & Lemonade, so stumbling across these releases was a nice surprise. ICYMI: Wilsen was last week's "Friday Fascination" on the blog, and you can get the full scoop on the band here. & this definitely won't be the first or last time that you'll hear about the latest from Bondax & Ryn Weaver whom have both released stellar tracks that have been blowing up since day 1.
In short, this entire playlist rules.

Friday Fascination: WILSEN

(Photo by: Kassy Balli via http://kballi.com/)

Better late to the party than to never arrive at all, right? I recently stumbled across an amazing band that goes by the name of WILSEN. Situated in New York & lead by Tamsin Wilson, this band conveys a sound that blends Daughter (whom they've toured with), Laura Marling, and Sharon Van Etten all into one. Her debut LP Sirens from last year is nothing less than a body of beautiful work & an inspirational introduction to the public as a musician. Personal favorite? "Magnolia" off her latest EP which shares the same name (listen to 3 out of the 4 songs from the EP below via SoundCloud.)

It's hard not to fall in love with WILSEN after watching their Buzzsession for The Wild Honey Pie (watch it here.)
Snag the Magnolia EP on iTunes for a penny less than $4 (aka the best $3.99 you're going to spend this week.) So what are you waiting for? Get on it!

Getting Back Under The Covers: Part IV

Have you ever had one of those days where the second you get home from work, you instantly crawl into bed and never want to leave? That was me yesterday, so I figured while I was under the covers - why not make another playlist filled with those? Hope you dig this batch, because I definitely do

For more covers, I suggest checking out the Covers Tab here on LYED as well as the stellar A.V. Undercover site (via A.V. Club.) I won't spoil the surprise, but let's just say there's magic being made over there with every cover.

LYED x Governors Ball Music Festival 2014

After looking at the lineup, there was no way I could pass up The Governors Ball Music Festival held in New York City. BANKS, Interpol, and The Kills all in one day? How could I turn the other cheek? This was the 4th year of the festival and by far the most impressive bill to date (although I would have loved to have gone in 2012 to see Modest Mouse on the island). The weather was absolutely perfect and the drinks were way overpriced, but hey, what's a festival without overpriced drinks? A major highlight was finally catching the talented Jenny Lewis perform both new & old JL material as well as a few Rilo Kiley classics such as "Silver Lining" & "Moneymaker." I miraculously survived the front of the crowd for Sleigh Bells, and witnessed some strange moments during Tyler The Creators set which may or may not have been the youngest crowd at the festival. If I ever get the chance, you bet your bottom dollar I'll be making my way to the East Coast for more. Even looking back at it after a couple weeks have passed - I still get butterflies from how great the experience was. Enough of my blabbering, below are some photos I took on Siera's handy dandy iPhone (because why take it with a 4 when you can take it on an iPhone 5s?)

FRIDAY:

Big Boi of Outkast

Andre 3000 of Outkast

SATURDAY:

Aluna Francis (of AlunaGeorge) with 1/2 of Disclosure

Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells

SUNDAY:

Alison Mosshart of The Kills

Jamie Hince of The Kills

Paul Banks of Interpol

FRESHVIBESMONDAY #32

23 songs for FVM#32 on the 23rd of June? You got it. Hope you dig this week's selection of remixes, original releases, and there's even a cover in there if you can spot it. It's been a minute since we've heard from Lucy Rose, and this may or may not be the most upbeat tune I've heard from her (FYI I LOVE IT.) She's not the only one who's been hiding away making new music, just take a look at the list and you'll know what I mean. It's a sweet preview of what's to come, and I couldn't be more excited about what Tennis, Mesita, Jessie Ware, and Zola Jesus have all dropped in the past week or so. I could go on, but you have quite a bit of listening to do. Enjoy!

Friday Fascination: The Blues and Greys

In The Blues and Greys debut EP Bright Lights, you'll find the perfect combination of nostalgia and charisma. They recently opened for Lemaitre at SOhO (in Santa Barbara) last month where I caught them for the first time, and since then I haven't gone a day without listening to these guys. "The Assignation" is hands down my favorite song from them & it sounded even better live. If these guys make it to your neck of the woods, don't let them pass you by!
Did I forget to mention they nailed their cover of New Orders' "Ceremony?" Word on the block is that they've been in the studio working on a second album, so make sure you keep an eye on this band. They've got the potential that most bands strive to achieve. Listen to the EP above and let me know what you think!

FRESHVIBESMONDAY #31

Gotta keep it short & sweet since time is money when you're trying to blog on a plane. Lots of familiar names in this playlist, and if you think I was going to leave Death Grips out of it - you better think twice!

My first Governors Ball experience was definitely one for the books. I highly recommend checking out a festival such as this one if you're looking to catch one on the East coast. That's all I will say for now, watch this space for more to come!
P.S. If you're dying to see some of that acts I watched while at the fest, head over to Instagram :) @_emiLYED

LYED x The Governors Ball Music Festival Preview

It’s a goal of mine to make it to a different festival each year in addition to Coachella & Outside Lands, and for the past 3 years I’ve been able to do so (Bonnaroo, FYF Fest, Primavera Sound.) This is my first time making it to The Governors Ball on Randalls Island so I honestly have no idea what to expect. What attracted me to this lineup? Interpol, Interpol, and…. you guessed it, INTERPOL. In addition to seeing one of my most favorite bands play in their own backyard after 3 years of pursuing side projects, the rest of the lineup seemed like a LYED dream come true. The bill overall is a little less than half of the amount of bands at Coachella, but it's been a minute since I've been to an actual music festival on an island. A smaller bill equals less conflicts (you would think) but of course there will always be a point where you have to sacrifice an experience for another one that might be more rewarding.

FRIDAY HIGHLIGHTS:
This will be my first time seeing: Jenny Lewis (I've caught her multiple times with Postal Service, but I must admit I'm ecstatic to finally hear her solo stuff live.) Here's the lyric video to her most recent release "Just One of the Guys."
Crossing my fingers that I make it early enough to catch: HAERTS
TV On The Radio vs. Grimes: This is probably the most difficult conflict of the entire weekend for me, but I'm gonna have to go with TV on the Radio although Grimes has been giving a preview of what's to come this weekend (and it sounds amazing.)

SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS:
This will be my first time seeing: Lucius & Broken Bells
Crossing my fingers that I make it early enough to catch: The Internet
Lucius vs. CLASSIXX? This would be my 4th time catching the LA duo and I've yet to see Lucius, so I'm going with the latter this time. Their live performance on KEXP at The Triple Door is something worth getting hyped over (check it out here.)
P.S. Did you know that Lucius was a feature on Friday Fascination last year?

SUNDAY HIGHLIGHTS:
This will be my first time seeing: BANKS
Crossing my fingers that I make it early enough to catch: Meg Myers
SKATERS vs. Bleachers? SKATERS all the way! The NYC four-piece played a show to a rather small crowd in Santa Barbara that I consider an opportunity that will never ever happen (more on that experience later.) Crossing my fingers they play their cover of "This Charming Man" by The Smiths. (If you're not familiar with SKATERS, check them out via their SoundCloud page.)

(Click here to catch the rest of the set times & more information about the fun that's about to take place this weekend in NYC.)

Show Preview: The Preatures @ The Echo

I couldn't be more excited about tonight's show at The Echo (Los Angeles.) The Preatures are playing a special headlining [sold out] show just a day after performing at School Night! in Hollywood. Unfortunately, I missed the Australian five-piece at Coachella, but managed to catch a surprise performance during Classixx's set when Isabella Manfredi & Gideon Benson (both from The Preatures) hopped on stage for a live performance of "Is This How You Feel" (Classixx Remix.)

The band has been around for a few years now, but last year's Is This How You Feel? EP captured the attention of nearly everyone and their brother. (To hear their debut EP Shaking Hands via Spotify click here.) Since the release of the EP they've dropped two new tracks: "Better Than It Ever Could Be" & "Two Tone Melody" (which was featured on yesterday's edition of freshvibesmonday.) I've only been to The Echo once before to watch Little Green Cars, and its intimate size makes it one of my favorite venues in LA.

Will I see you there? Hope so!
(Grab Is This How You Feel on iTunes here!)

FRESHVIBESMONDAY #30

Welcome to the 30th round of FRESHVIBESMONDAY, yay! FVM has came a long way since I first decided to dedicate Mondays to posting the most recent music I've been listening to. Anyways, I decided to step it up a notch and select 30 songs for today's post. From BANKS' most recent gem "Drowning" to the latest from one of my favorite bands in junior high, Motion City Soundtrack - you're bound to find something that fits your taste.

On Wednesday I'll be making my way to the Big Apple to attend The Governors Ball Music Festival on Randall's Island. This will be my first time checking out the festival & I have no idea what to expect! Stick around for playlists featuring the artists performing at the 3-day festival as well as who I'm looking forward to seeing the most! Will you be there?
