Friday Fascination: Jane Tyrrell

Echoes in the Aviary is the debut release from Melbourne artist Jane Tyrrell, and easily one of the most passionate records I've heard all year. From the first listen, it's not hard to identify how carefully this record was crafted. In short: it's absolute magic.

Released on October 17th via Elefant Traks (which is the home to artists such as Urthboy & The Herd, who Tyrrell is a member of) I've had it on heavy rotation ever since. (To get a more in-depth perception, watch the making of Echoes in the Aviary via YouTube here.)

Grab Echoes in the Aviary on iTunes here!

What's your favorite song from the album? My personal favorites are "The Last Stand" & "Ships", but I highly recommend giving this album a solid listen from beginning to end. I'll be the first to say, I get chills from nearly every song, she's that good.

Did I mention that Jane Tyrrell also has a Tumblr & Twitter account? Follow her for more updates, and I hope you'll join me in crossing our fingers that she'll be making her way over to the states soon for a proper show.

FRESHVIBESMONDAY #50

True Life: I can't believe this is the 50th round of FRESHVIBESMONDAY! Whoop whoop!  50 times of me saying Happy Monday (and all that other goofy stuff), because every week should always start off with a bang aka new & fresh music. As always, keep an eye on this space as the playlist gets updated when new tunes are released.
Here's to 50 more!

Friday Fascination: Phoria

It's honestly challenging not to be fascinated by this Brighton 5-piece that go by the name of Phoria. It seems like it was just yesterday when I discovered their debut EP titled Bloodworks (released April 2013, listen here.) What really caught my attention was "Red", a song that is quite soothing to the point that it's almost too good to be real. As I had hoped, the rest of the EP helped shape this body of material into something I still treasure to this day.

It's safe to say they went above and beyond with the most EP Display, released back in June. Consider this talented band a perfect blend of Radiohead & Alt-J, but my admiration for this band needs no comparisons. Need proof for yourself? Listen below! My personal favorite is "Emanate" but to be quite honest - this EP is charming from beginning to end.

One can only imagine how the US will react once Phoria make their way across the pond for a proper show or two. In this case, it's best if you keep your eye on this band - or you can always rely on LYED for updates.
If you're in the mood for more (which you should be), I highly recommend checking out their SoundCloud page. It's not only filled with original material, but also with an abundance of remixes from other bands of Phoria's material & vice-versa. Good luck trying to get away from these guys once you make your way into this sanctuary of emotion and beauty, because it's unbelievable how much a song can affect your idea with the simplest of.
Phoria is currently taking over indiemusicfilter.com, click to see the magic that's happening over there.

FRESHVIBESMONDAY #48

(Shout-out to my friend @mallorystarr for lending me this week's image for FVM.)

Keeping it short & sweet with the selection this week for now, but there's no telling of what gems will be released in the next couple of days - so as always, watch this space. I have to admit, I'm extra excited to hear from Tei Shi again - this time with "Bassically" a song that's sparked the internet's airwaves ever so perfectly. (I highly recommend listening to "Nevermind The End" over on her SoundCloud, that song gives me butterflies every time I listen to it.) ALSO, we've been exposed to the first taste of Oh Land's forthcoming album with the title track "Head Up High." Definitely a fan.
If the name Crooked Colours rings a bell, it could have been when LYED featured them as a Friday Fascination back in May? Heard "Capricious" for the first time on Saturday night and instantly added it to this week's FVM. P.S. Hope you're as excited about "FROOT" as I am, there's no telling what Marina Diamandis has up her sleeve for album #3.

PSSTT. Hey Santa Barbara, Happy New Noise Week! Hoping to absorb as much music as possible on Wednesday & Thursday starting with one of my favorite bands ever, Polica at SOHo! I was fortunate enough to catch this four-piece in Philadelphia two years ago at Union Transfer, with the talented Gardens & Villa as the opening band (as if I couldn't have been anymore homesick.) Needless to say it was one of the best nights I experienced while living in Philly - because seeing Polica live is unlike anything else. Do yourself a favor and grab a ticket now before it sells out, seriously!

Friday Fascination: Dinner And A Suit

Dinner And A Suit consists of Jonathan Capeci, Joey Beretta, Anthony Genca, and Drew Scheuer all from Nashville, Tennessee. They released an EP earlier this week titled Stay, and it's hard not to when listening to the opening track "Can't Get Enough." (Watch the Behind the Scenes of Making the STAY EP here.)

I've said it before and I will say it again. "Can't Get Enough" is an excellent song and the perfect introduction to Dinner and a Suit for someone who hasn't heard of the band before. The 3 tracks that follow after continue to impress and brush upon a style that reminds me of a mix of Bad Suns & The Head and the Heart. In short, this band succeeds at making music that's graceful even when it accompanies some of the most adrenalized lyrics.
You can definitely bet that I am looking forward to what the future has in store for this band, so as always - keep an eye on this Friday Fascination. After diving into the EP, visit their SoundCloud to catch up on the band's older material - I highly recommend it.

FMLYBND EP Release Show @ SOHo 10/10

This Friday night We The Beat is throwing an extra special show at one of my favorite venues ever, SOHo for the release of FMLYBND's Back To Life EP. Sun Daes (also from Isla Vista) will be opening so this is the right time to show your support for local music. Grab your tickets for the event here & be sure to spread the word - it's going to be a great night in Santa Barbara!
P.S. If you're not familiar with FMLYBND, time to do your homework and get to listening - this EP is an automatic favorite of mine.

FRESHVIBESMONDAY #47

(Photo credit: Rachel Taylor, be sure to check out her Instagram account because it's filled with the best eye candy.)
I'm sooooo excited that October is finally here. Not only is this month filled with amazing releases from some of my favorite artists (such as Caribou, Ben Howard, Stars, and Cold War Kids.) These aren't the only ones, peep the entire list on Metacritic here!)
Also taking place this month is one of my favorite music festivals, Treasure Island in San Francisco! This year's lineup features OutkastBANKSJungleTV On The Radio, and several more over the span of two days (with zero sets overlapping.) In short, it's going to rule & you shouldn't miss out.
Around the same time as Treasure Island Music Festival, there is the New Noise Music Festival which takes place all throughout downtown Santa Barbara October 15-19! This year's lineup features a few of my favorite bands & a handful of SB's finest - FMLYBND, Mexico City Blondes, The Blues and Greys. For more information & tix - visit the New Noise website.
ICYMI: FVM#46 (posted last week) was a pretty solid playlist, so if you're still on the hunt for some new tunes check this playlist out.

Friday Fascination: The Rural Alberta Advantage

Thanks to a good friend, I was recently introduced to this Saddle Creek band by the name of The Rural Alberta Advantage (or the raa) & if you haven't caught on by now - I have a giant soft spot for indie rock. Except the raa is so much more than just a band that makes indie rock - they're a trio (made up of Paul Banwatt, Amy Cole, and Nils Edenloff) who's music is filled to the brim with soul, nostalgia, and all that good stuff that gives you butterflies due to its impact. A perfect example of their strength is "On The Rocks" one of the first songs that made me fall in love with their 3rd (and most recent) album Mended With Gold.

After digging deep into their discography I wanted to make my first & only point of this post very clearMended With Gold is an album your ears need to hear, immediately. This album isn't even a month old, so dive in below and let me know your favorite song(s)!

P.S. Not only can you grab Mended With Gold on Saddle Creek Records, but it's also available on Paper Bag Records, too. They've currently started their fall tour throughout the US, check the dates out below!
