Sliiiiiiide to the left, sliiiiiiide to the right, take it back now, ya’ll, TWO STEP THIS TIME! Let us see that fancy footwork, boys!

Funk at the Bowl. The Santa Barbara Bowl. What. A. Show. You want to see people genuinely enjoying themselves? Go to a show where dancing all night is not only encouraged, it’s borderline required. Kind of like how people get runners high, you can literally see the adrenaline pumping through veins when that beat drops and the guitar starts singin’. 

Seriously, buy the ticket, take the ride (to the music venue.)

Just know: it’s. about. to. go. d-o-w-n. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya.

Com Truise

The day started off with electro/synthwave vibes from the always cool, Com Truise. The crowd responded to his sweet beats that made you move your feet in preparation for the grand finale. Having remixed so many jams from bands like Flight Facilities, Charlie XCX to Daft Punk, Truise was definitely the perfect opener to warm up your rump muscles!

The Glitch Mob

Following Com Truise, the electronic trio consisting of "edIT, Boreta, and Ooah" took the stage with an eye catching compound-esque-raptor contraption, called “The Blade." SO COOL. They intertwine technology/instrumental usage with a live band feel. Having so much energy, their bass-driven songs make you feel really, really good. If you get the chance to check them out at a festival or show, DO IT. Also, shout out to 1/3 of the group, Justin Boreta for reppin’ his hometown, Santa Barbara, filling us all with hometown pride!

CHROMEO

And then the lights went down. The bowl starts to roar, and chants follow, “CHROME-O, OOOOOO”. Repeated once, repeated twice, repeated thrice. 

The music starts - the.crowd.goes.OFF. 

The light show starts, and we’re graced with the funky-cool, attention commanding, dynamic duo- CHROMEEEEOOOOO!!! I’ll say it once, and i’ll say it always, if you’ve never seen Chromeo live, you haven’t lived. The feel good, self proclaimed, Funk Lordz, will cannon ball you right into a subliminal, existential full on PAR-TAY mindset. Everytime I see these guys, I leave elated, creatively inspired, and with a smile on my face. Thank you, Chromeo, for bringing the feel good(s) to Santa Barbara.

LYED x Funk at The Bowl

This Saturday (5/30) Chromeo will be transforming the Santa Barbara Bowl into the town's largest dance party. Joining the FunkLordz will be The Glitch Mob and Com Truise, making this Saturday one to remember (to wear comfy shoes, duh.) Since Sasha from Let Your Ears Decide will be there covering the event, here's a playlist filled with our favorite tracks from the acts above to help you get in the "right type" of mood.

When I, (Sasha Huckoby) say “summer”, you say “ROUND-UPPPPP”!!!!

E-N-E-R-G-Y was the name of this game. High, intense, shut-up-and-dance-with-me type of energy.

The day was warm, and the vibes were chill. Anyone and everyone showed up to show-out, ready to sing, dance and make this one helluva summer-kickoff party.

Starting the day off in a tizzy, upon arriving to the bowl, I was pleasantly surprised to watch people of all ages come together for one thing: music. Whether young or old, local or out-of-towner, the Santa Barbara Bowl was slammed with countless heads and (some painted) smiling faces. 

The show kicked off with local faves, The Blues and Greys, serenading the crowd with sweet melodic tunes and familiar happy faces. It’s always refreshing to watch a local band gain the support of an audience full of strangers. T’was awesome, you guys - can’t wait to watch see you perform again!

Up next, Family of the Year graced us with their funky-alternative-indie presence. Everyone hit the stage with a super I-woke-up-like-this-because-I’m-naturally-beautiful feel, and made our hearts swoon with not only their plethora of instruments, but that “love at first sight” lyrical feeling. Seriously, listen to them and tell me it doesn’t remind of you of every meet-cute ever in all your favorite rom-com’s. I definitely twirled around in happiness for way longer than I should have (as I was taking photos for zee blog!).

Have you ever been hit by a ton of bricks? In a good way? Metaphorically speaking. Because I have. And they go by the name of WALK THE MOON. Do you guys remember that song “Down With The Sickness” by Disturbed? Well, mostly just the beginning with the, “OH, AH, AH, AH”? (just google it really quick so we can be on the same page here.) Okay, so that opening of a song is literally Walk the Moon in a nutshell.  That, and the fact that they bounced and greeted us on on stage to Ah Zebenya from our childhood favorite, The Lion King. SO. MUCH. ENERGY. You’re immediately excited, even if you don’t know the words (which I didn’t). This band definitely stole the show with their gnarly crowd involvement. People were back-flipping off the of the speakers. I mean, they weren’t really, but I would NOT have been surprised had I witnessed that. 

Killed it. Left a fan. Thanks, boys.

Following Walk The Moon, sultry, beautiful BANKS took to the stage with her trip-hop, silky songs. Unfortunately, I wasn’t granted permission to take photos of her, but that did not stop me from having a good time. Biased as I may be (BECAUSE I LOVE HER), you have to give it up to a girl who can just come out with nothing but herself and the natural instrument she was born with-her voice. Granted, she’s got super cool beats and a live band, but there’s no hiding that voice. 

Sing it, girl, sing it. Maybe next time? Idk? Lmk? Ttyl. #BFF.

And before I knew it, the show was coming to a close. Sadness filled my heart, tears filled my eyes, and that was only because OF MONSTERS AND MEN came out of nowhere and hit me with ALL THE EMOTIONS! Again, slightly biased here because I love this band. One song in particular that I think everyone loves (or should): “Little Talks”. Like, come on, who doesn’t love a band that can write a catchy tune? Not only can they write a catchy tune, but they OWN on their instruments. They really have a way of making you feel like it’s just you and them at an intimate show, singing directly into your soul. 

Bravo, Monsters, bravo. 

What a fun day it was. I had the pleasure of seeing tons of friends and familiar faces, and I also had the pleasure of getting to photograph so many great artists for my first time EVER, right here at our very own, beautiful Santa Barbara Bowl. A big shout out to LYED, the Santa Barbara Bowl and Jessica Puchli for having me.

Alabama Shakes with special guest Chicano Batman at Santa Barbara Bowl 08/14

ALABAMA SHAKES @ SANTA BARBARA BOWL  08/14

If you missed Alabama Shakes at Coachella this year, or aren't making it up the coast to the Outside Lands in August, have no fear Santa Barbara! On Friday August 14th, Alabama Shakes will be making their Santa Barbara debut at the beloved Santa Barbara Bowl with Chicano Batman opening the show. They're currently on tour in support of their sophomore album Sound & Color (released via ATO Records), which is the follow-up to their 2012 debut Boys & Girls (currently certified GOLD.)  

The procedure of pressing Sound & Color onto vinyl wasn't , and instead it underwent a unique method that involved comprising lead singer/guitarist Brittany Howard. As an avid vinyl collector, I highly recommend that you watch what took place behind the making of this record as Howard documented it herself. You can clearly grasp how important this procedure was to the band, which makes it quite heartwarming to say the least.    

Fun Fact: Sound & Color debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200, selling 97,000 units in the first week of release. (Grab it either on iTunes or Amazon for vinyl/cd/mp3/etc.) Don't forget, you can always pick it up at your local record store!

Lindsey Stirling with special guest LIGHTS at Santa Barbara Bowl 8/15

Electronic violinist Lindsey Stirling, will take her critically acclaimed live show on the road with her highly anticipated North American 2015 Summer Tour. The multi-city trek will make a stop at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Saturday, August 15 at 7:00 PM. Special guest Lights will open the show. Tickets go on sale Friday, April 24 at NOON. Lindsey’s last US tour sold over 100,000 headline tickets and nearly 200,000 headline tickets worldwide. 

Side note: Lindsey played a sold out show at SOhO back in Nov 2012, so one can only imagine how much more magical her return will be. 

The tour will continue to support Lindsey’s critically acclaimed sophomore album Shatter Me, which according to Neilson, was the #1 and #2 best-selling Electronic album in 2014. Released on April 29, 2014 via Lindsey’s own label Lindseystomp Records, Shatter Me debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart, #1 on the iTunes Album Chart, and spent an impressive 21 weeks straight at the #1 spot on the Billboard Classical Album Chart. Since the release of Shatter Me, Lindsey has made a slew of national television appearances on shows such as Good Morning America, Today Show and the View and was recently honored with YouTube’s prestigious Music Award, which recognizes the site’s 50 biggest artists and musical acts.
