Mondays aren't always a pain when there's new music to be heard, am iiiiii right? Pretty stoked to include two new songs from local Santa Barbara bands FMLYBND & Mexico City Blondes (who was a recent Friday Fascination.) With every SBTRKT release, I feel that I'm becoming more impatient waiting for the new album (but I have a feeling that it's going to be one of the greatest of 2014.) Thanks to The Wild Honey Pie, I recently fell in love with a duo that go by the name of Leisure Cruise (who released their debut album this year, listen to it here.) All in all, this week's selection is shaping up to be a good one, but if you missed out on FVM#44 - I highly suggest that you check it out!
Don't forget, this playlist gets updated throughout the week so as always, watch this space.
To describe Superhumanoids as "music to help kiss the doldrums away" is exactly what I retrieve when sifting through the material that they've been releasing since their self-released EP Urgency (2010.) I consider this rising Los Angeles band to be a classic staple in my library, and I wouldn't be surprised if you decide to do the same once you're finished with this post. Cameron, Sarah, and Max formed Superhumanoids in 2009. After finally getting the chance to see them open for Local Natives at Southside Music Hall (Dallas, Texas) back in March of last year - I knew this wouldn't be the last time I would see them again. In fact, I was fortunate to catch the trio in Ventura earlier this year when they opened for Lord Huron at The Magestic Ventura Theater.
Last year they released their debut full-length Exhibitionists via LA label Innovative Leisure. I must admit - it's a spectacular album, and sounds even better on wax. (Pick it up on Innovative Leisure's website here, or if iTunes is your things - here it is.) Last year they filmed a session for Yours Truly in LA at their own home, watch below or check it out on YT's website. "So Strange" is one of the prettiest tracks off the full-length, and to hear it in a different way such as this makes the material even more experimental.
P.S. Next month they're going on tour with Erasure - the dates are below & if they're coming your way, don't miss out! (Grab tickets here.)
Happy Thursday from LYED, here's another healthy dose of covers that I'm currently digging. Not going to lie, I was pretty surprised to see that Foals once covered Swedish House Mafia, but after listening to it - I'm 100% about it. Which one was your favorite?
Time to unwind from your Manic Monday with this week's edition of FVM. A good friend of mine has been on a roll with releasing music under the moniker Olivver, and his latest "Lucy (Hurt People Hurt People)" has won my ears over as one of the best songs of the summer. It's been a minute since we've heard from White Arrows & Lemonade, so stumbling across these releases was a nice surprise. ICYMI: Wilsen was last week's "Friday Fascination" on the blog, and you can get the full scoop on the band here. & this definitely won't be the first or last time that you'll hear about the latest from Bondax & Ryn Weaver whom have both released stellar tracks that have been blowing up since day 1.
HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY / MONDAY AFTER SXSW! Whether you're in recovery mode or rallying like the champ that you are - here are 11 relatively new(ish) tunes to accompany the day. I'll save my SXSW recap post for sometime this week (once I feel better than how Lady Gaga looks in the image above.) I learned quite a bit from spending 48 hours in ATX that I'll gladly share with y'all, but until then - I'll just be weeping over the fact that Snakadaktal broke up. RIP Australian bb's who's debut albumSleep In The Water was one of the dreamiest releases, ever.
Here is everything I've been listening to for the past couple of days! If you couldn't tell already - the theme of this post is "no words just music." ;)
In honor of BloomOFFICIALLY being released into the real world tomorrow on Sub Pop records, enjoy another track by them that will do nothing but astound your mind & body. Be sure to pick up this album that apparently matches the title, and come on - IT'S BEACH HOUSE. In "The Hours" I definitely receive a vibe that reminds me of "Master of None", a track from their self-titled first album that remains as one of my favorites to this day.
After I found out that Charli XCX wrote this track for Icona Pop, I had even more of a desire to check it out. If you're looking for electronic dance-pop, then this might be a perfect fit. Click on the link below to download it for free!
You can consider myself a new fan of Superhumanoids as of a few weeks ago, and i've definitely developed a liking for them the more I listen to them. I get a vibe that blends White Sea & Savoir Adore together that makes for the perfect summer day.
After I first heard about New Young Pony Club in high school from a classmate (back in the MySpace days to be exact). They're an English electronic band from London who's own take on their music is "We marry the dance ethic with the pop ethic, and make something that you can dance to and sing along to". If this is the first time you've heard the words "New Young Pony Club", then do yourself a favor and listen to the track "Ice Cream".
LANA DEL REY - Goodbye Kiss (Radio 1 in the Live Lounge)
For those of you who aren't aware, "Goodbye Kiss" is originally a track by Kasabian. I really appreciate how LDR is able to execute a track by still keeping a classic mood, but her ability to make it sound like this track was released much earlier then September of last year. You can access the original track on their latest album Velociraptor, or feel free to check out a live version of Kasabian performing "Goodbye Kiss" below.
So, what do you think? Did Lana Del Rey's cover transform it into a different sound that allows you to appreciate both tracks as separate gems? Did this cover not stand a chance to the original from the English rock band whose been turning heads on & off since 1997?
Just enough of a trip to take your sober mind into an incoherent paradise without the comedown. This group definitely executes electronic dance beats but shakes up the sound with cultural influence (British/Spanish). Needless to say they're what I like to call a "mixed drink".
